Winter is a great time to visit Cambridge Markets EQ

The gentle curls of smoke from Centennial Park fireplaces invite us indoors to escape the chilly evening. The bare trees cast spindly silhouettes in front of a darkening Oxford Street sky. And morning constitutionals elicit icy exhales and demand the donning of a puffa jacket. Yes, winter is here. But far from lament the crisp and cold days, we’re embracing the season for the opportunity it brings to be a little quieter, more still and less frenzied. Winter welcomes us indoors to cosy braises, cups of tea and coffee with friends, and the chance to wear those fabulous winter coats that spend nine months in our closets fending off moths.

Not that we’re looking to hibernate, simply rejuvenate by swaddling ourselves in woollens and nourishing ourselves with beautiful, warming produce and, perhaps, indulge a little more than usual. We’re all for getting out and enjoying the cooler, still-sun-drenched days. So join us at the market this Saturday to stock up on those wonderful winter supplies, such as hand-blended teas, baked goodies and fresh, seasonal produce perfect for turning into a one-pot miracle. See you there!

It's the season for citrus. Wonderful juicy oranges, tart lemons and lunchbox-ready mandarins. Our farmers have truckloads of these vitamin-C rich delights, so come and fill your baskets. But apart from the usual juices and snacking, what else can we do with citrus? Why not lush up orange segments with some brandy whipped cream, bake an orange and almond cake for afternoon tea, try your hand at preserving your own lemons, or if that all seems a bit like hard work, why not mix yourself a pre-emptive hot toddy to fend off winter nasties?

Coming along to the market for your weekly groceries and pantry top-up is one of the healthiest and safest ways to shop. Our EQ market is set outdoors under umbrellas and is a Covid-safe environment where you can come to socialise, support local businesses and purchase products and produce that is ethically, sustainably and passionately grown, made and crafted. It’s the perfect two-way street, where you can tend to the community and your own health at the same time.

A big thank you to all our wonderful customers and supporters who braved the chilly weather to support our Watsons Bay market last weekend. It was a fabulous day and it was very heartening to see so many people come out to shop, eat and enjoy the community spirit. Our next Watsons Bay market will be held in spring — we’ll let you know when with plenty of notice. Our next market outside the Eastern Suburbs will be the Ryde Wharf Market on Sunday June 13. Put the date in your diary.

Thank you and keep cosy!
