Celebrating the women of Cambridge Markets

Yesterday we celebrated International Women’s Day. It’s a day to pause and appreciate the wonderful women in our lives and our communities who contribute enormously to every aspect of society, from mothers and grandmothers to CEOs and surgeons. IWD is so important as an acknowledgment of the hard work women do, often walking a precarious tightrope that calls for an intricate balance of career and family. Although we all know this happens 365 days a year, not just one, it’s a chance to give a big high-five to women doing it for themselves, and everyone else, too!

Here at Cambridge Markets our team is led by two clever businesswomen and mothers, Bec Fox and Mads Anderson. They’re hardworking, determined and a true inspiration to the team, our stallholders and our market community. They’re the first to champion women empowered by running their own small businesses and do what they can to provide support and encouragement along the way. This week, we’d like to shine a bright light on a couple of our many incredible female stallholders who are a true inspiration for other women who may be thinking of channelling their vast talents into their own businesses.

Come along and say hello to Jasmine from Nourish Catering & Co at Wednesday’s market. A chef for 20 years, Yasmine crafts delightfully sweet morsels to tempt even the most restrained among us from triple-chocolate cakes to Nutella-filled indulgences. There isn’t a treat she hasn’t mastered, be it cakes, doughnuts, puddings, pies, brioche, bliss balls or muffins. No matter your sweet spot, you’ll find something to wholly satisfy it at Nourish. Yasmine is also currently baking her sweetest creation yet, a baby! So be sure to pop down to take the cake and give Yasmine some well wishes for her new arrival.

Michelle of Naturally Sauced struggled to stomach the huge amount of wastage she witnessed in her work as a chef. Combining her love for food and the planet, she set about creating a business that respected both and gave home cooks an arsenal of flavour in their pantry. Michelle’s addictive sauces, condiments and dressings are made using sustainably sourced, ethically harvested ingredients and packaged mindfully in biodegradable packaging and labels. Naturally Sauced is a truly outward-focused business run by a passionate woman making a real difference. To that we say, ‘pass the sauce!’

As things start to cool down, it’s time to heat up that oven that’s been rightfully ignored all summer. Autumn vegetables lend themselves beautifully to roasted salads that are simple to prepare and packed with flavour and nutrition. Try sweet potato roasted with cauliflower, red onion, pine nuts and some spinach leaves. Add some excitement to the mix with a sprinkling of sumac, a drizzle of good olive oil and some crumbled goat’s curd and you have dinner done – perfect for meat-free Monday or add some sliced chorizo to the pan to impart a salty hit of umami that will satisfy carnivores.

Don’t forget, our fantastic Watson’s Bay and Ryde Wharf Markets are both on this Sunday. If you can’t choose which of these lovely waterside events to attend, we can’t blame you, and sorry, we can’t help you decide, either. Both are full of delicious hot food, enlivening brews, and browse-and-splurge worthy stalls encompassing everything from fashion and homewares to plants, pets and pantry penchants.

Thank you and enjoy the market!
