Have some spooky good fun this weekend at the markets

There haven’t been too many occasions for riotous fun this year, so we’re set to embrace Halloween for a bit of light-heartedness. Kick it off this weekend by getting spooky at the Entertainment Quarter’s Halloween Family Fest. There’ll be rides and carnival games, a haunted house, costume competition and trick-or-treat bags up for grabs. There’s also a Monster Mash Disco and a moonlit open-air cinema showing spine-shivering (but kid-friendly) flicks.

If you’re getting elbow-deep in this celebration of all things kooky and spooky, you can pick up some Sweetie Darling lollipops online to be delivered in time for when the ghouls come knocking on Halloween. Or make your own fruity treats by stopping by the market for strawberries and bananas to dip in melted chocolate and, once set, decorating with frightening faces using an icing pen. It’s an easy trick to turn everyday fruit into a hauntingly good treat.

If this moody weather has you hankering for a comforting brew, stop by Ooh La Chai at the market this Wednesday. Each fortnight, you’ll find this Australian-made and owned stall dispensing fragrant chai tea that’s free from sugar, preservatives, chemicals and gluten. Choose from sticky chai, vegan sticky, decaf masala, and masala chai. There’s always a fresh brew-of-the-day on the pour, so come and enjoy a cup from your local chai wala. Grab a bite, too, from this week’s excellent food providers, The Italian Kitchen,  Mojo Picon, Gozleme, and Pho Bay Noodle.

Treat yourself at the market this week with a visit to Berliner Bakery. Rachael Kourentis makes small batch, artisan doughnuts locally that are true to a classic eastern Europe recipe, just with a few delicious modern twists. Try salted caramel, butterscotch and macadamia, fig mascarpone and white chocolate, or stick to the traditional jam-filled version. Rachael also has a range of vegan doughnuts, so everyone can enjoy a little sugar-dusted goodness. If you can’t make it to the market, you can still indulge your sweet cravings by ordering online for home delivery.
